History

The Centre for the Study of Migration was established in 1995 by Dr Anne Kershen to provide a focal point in London for those concerned with the study of the movements of people locally, nationally and internationally. From 1995 to September 2009, the Centre was based at the department of Politics at Queen Mary and was directed by Dr. Anne Kershen. During this time, a number of conferences, workshops and seminars were organised by the Centre on topics which included issues of identity, language and labour, food and health in the migrant experience and immigration to London from Eastern Europe.

In 2010, the Centre was relocated to the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. Between 2010 and 2014, the Centre was under the Directorship of Professor Parvati Nair (Principal Editor of Crossings: Journal of Migration and Culture) and Professor Bill Swartz. In 2015, the Centre came under the Directorship of Dr Kavita Datta based in the School of Geography.

The Centre continues to concentrate its focus on developing interdisciplinary, post-doctoral research on migration and has inaugurated a sustained programme of talks by invited speakers, seminars, workshops and conferences.
