Do you employ off-payroll workers such as contractors, project managers and specialist lecturers? Action required
This is a reminder that new rules on off-payroll working in the public sector will be introduced from Thursday 6 April. It will affect how we pay those working through an intermediary (ie, contractors, consultants, project managers, specialist lecturers, etc). If you are engaging agency workers, you need to notify Finance by Friday 24 March. More.
MyHR unavailable Thursday 23 and Friday 24 March
A reminder that MyHR and ResourceLink (web view) will be unavailable from 8am this Thursday, 23 March until 5pm on Friday 24 March. This is due to an end-of-year upgrade required to make sure that our payroll system complies with legislative changes in the new tax year. Any annual leave can be entered retrospectively, and pay day will be on Friday 24 March as planned (however payslips will be available to view from Wednesday 22 March). Do you work remotely? Changes to the remote access solution (VDI)
IT Services is releasing a new service for accessing QMUL systems, shared files and folders when working remotely. If you currently use the secure desktop service or the Horizon View client, please visit Connect for more information for switching to the new VDI service. Please be aware the old services will be turned off from Friday 31 March.
Queen Mary talent show – Friday 24 March
The Materials Society (Matsoc) and Engineers Without Borders (EWB) have collaborated to organise a Queen Mary Talent Show to be held on Friday 24 March from 6 to 8pm in the ArtsTwo Lecture Theatre at the Mile End campus. (Please note the show has been postponed from Friday 17 March due to a technical problem.) Entry is £3 payable at the door, and refreshments will be provided at the end of the show. Professional Development Week of Learning
The Professional Development Team’s ‘Week of Learning’ will take place from Monday 3 April to Friday 7 April. Every day there will be opportunities to attend a number of ‘lunch and learn’ sessions on a variety of topics or experience a coaching taster session. The team will be holding events at Mile End, Whitechapel and Charterhouse Square campuses, so please come along to the events that interest you. More.
Women's Mentoring Scheme – deadline next week
If you are interested in applying for the QMUL Women’s Mentoring Scheme for all faculties, the deadline is next Friday, 31 March. In addition to being assigned a mentor, participants will also be eligible to take part in the Women in Leadership programme. More.
Springboard Women’s Development Programme
This spring and summer, the award-winning Springboard Women's Development Programme will be running for the first time at Queen Mary. It will be open to women researchers in the late stages of their PhD (second or third year at least), or in postdoctoral or fellowship positions. QMSU Spring Sports Camp registration now open
Registration for the Queen Mary Students’ Union (QMSU) Spring Sports Camp is currently open. The camp will take place from Monday 3 to Friday 7 April and Monday 10 to Thursday 13 April in Qmotion Sports Hall for children of all ability levels, aged eight to 13. Participants will develop both social and sporting skills through a variety of challenges and activities in up to 15 different sports. Discounts are available for full-week and multi-week ticket purchases. More.

The Life Sciences Initiative at QMUL is still looking for outstanding and engaging images produced by staff, students and residents of Tower Hamlets for the Life Science Image Awards around the themes of health and wellbeing, health and technology, and beauty in medicine. More.
EECS flagship seminar series
In the first School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) flagship seminar for 2017 on Wednesday 3 May, Dr Uwe Sterr will be presenting ‘Laser communication in space, technic and potential’, where he discusses laser communication and its key role in providing real-time data transfer from satellites and aircraft infrastructure. CRED annual lecture 2017
The Centre for Research in Equality and Diversity (CRED) annual lecture 2017 offers insights into the toxic effects of racism at work and presents new research that deepens our understanding of its insidious and pervasive effects. It will be presented by Dr Belle Rose Ragins and will take place on Wednesday 29 March in the ArtsTwo Lecture Theatre, Mile End campus. More.
Professor Sushanta Mallick inaugural lecture
As part of the QMUL Inaugural Lecture Series, Professor Sushanta Mallick examines how far developing countries have come in their process of growth following the rapid pace of policy reforms in the 1990s, which he calls the 'great liberalisation' of the 1990s. The lecture will take place on Tuesday 28 March in the People’s Palace, Mile End campus. More.

The next Grand Round will take place tomorrow, Thursday 23 March at 12.45pm in the Morris Lecture Theatre, Robin Brook Centre, West Smithfield campus. Get ahead of the curve with the Barts Health NHS Trust and QMUL weight loss study
This study is investigating a meal replacement product on weight-loss and health markers such as blood pressure and cholesterol. If you are interested in weight-loss support, aged between 21 and 65, and do not have diabetes, you may be eligible. More.
